John Paul Moscarella

John Paul Moscarella (“JP”) is an international clean energy and climate finance executive, with over 34 years of experience. In 2022, he sold a boutique environmental finance advisory firm, Climate Finance Advisors, Benefit LLC (CFA) to WSP (a global engineering and consultancy firm with HQ in Canada, listed on TSX with a market cap in excess of US$21 billion and 70K employees globally). At CFA, he was responsible for all legal and contracts as well as business development. A women-owned and launched firm, CFA’s mission was to accelerate sustainable, climate-smart investments, and to integrate climate considerations into financial products, services and policies. JP was instrumental in CFA’s growth and exit since joining as a minority partner in 2018.

An entrepreneur, he has founded or co-founded four (4) companies, including Emerging Energy & Environment (EEE), a fund manager focused on Latin America, with circa US$65 MM in AUM, and Econergy International, an early mover in the carbon credits markets (clean energy projects globally) and renewables developer with 260 MW (190 MW net) of projects at the time of its sale in 2008 to GDF Suez (now Engie), one of the largest utilities in the world. With proven leadership skills, he has been a leading executive and general manager of several clean energy companies, as well as a fund manager for two private equity/venture capital funds; a board director for over a dozen companies and organizations; and, a pioneer in the field of carbon credits and climate finance, since the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, as well as a pioneer in clean-tech investments in Latin America (i.e., plug-in hybrid EVs, CNG, biofuels, methane recovery). He started his energy career at AES doing project development in Latin America in the early 1990s. Experience in natural gas, wind, hydropower, biomass, biofuels and fuel cells project development, as well as energy efficiency (ESCos) and developing solar businesses. Successful track record of creating shareholder value, such as Econergy’s IPO on the London AIM market in 2006, the NEOgás do Brasil sale, and CFA’s recent sale.

He has raised funds (debt and equity) directly for EEE, Econergy, and other companies, and raised capital and advised clients in the formation of several private equity funds or other specialized environmental funds, especially clean energy and carbon funds, for over US$1 billion in total capital mobilization overall. He is currently advising large institutional investor clients on a climate adaptation financing platform fund for frontier and emerging markets, to be launched in 2023 at nearly US$1.5 billion.

In recent years, he has worked with climate and clean energy start-ups arranging seed rounds and direct investments in community solar (Neighborhood Sun), electric vehicle charging station (Brightfield Transportation Solutions), software developer for climate analytics (The Climate Service, sold to S&P Global in Dec. ’21), wastewater technology company, solar credit start-up, regional composting and food waste, distributed solar start-up in Brazil among others, and is working on new climate funds recently such as a cooling fund start-up. MBA from Yale School of Management, BS Environmental Engineering from Cornell University.
